The SoBlog:
sweatin' over the oldies

july 21, 2009 I'm old.

Don't believe me? Ask my kids. Ask my wife, who loves to tease me about my age. Or, just take a ride in my car and listen to the radio.

On April 15th, Los Angeles radio station "Movin' 93.9" -- a radio station that played a lot of good music, and featured L.A. radio legend Rick Dees as the host of its morning show, but apparently never had a lot of listeners -- changed formats. Since I don't listen to Spanish-language radio, and I had 93.9 as one of the presets on my car radio, I decided to replace it. So now, that button is set to KOLA 99.9, an oldies station broadcasting from Redlands.

Oldies stations typically play a lot of stuff I don't like, but they also play vintage early-70's rock. (Stones, anyone?) They also typically play a lot of Motown, and I absolutely love Motown.

But something is very, very wrong.

update - july 27

I emailed KOLA's General Manager, since their "What Just Played on KOLA" page was broken. It looks like they've fixed it.

And... I'm not crazy! Right now, at 5:46 PM on the 27th of July, this is some of the stuff they have on their playlist.

BON JOVI - Livin' On A Prayer (3:05 PM)
SOFT CELL - Tainted Love/Where Did Our Love Go (10:44 AM)
JOURNEY - Open Arms (10:21 AM)
ROBERT PALMER - Addicted To Love (10:08 AM)
JOHN C MELLENCAMP - Small Town (9:58 AM)
TOM PETTY & THE HEARTBREAKERS - Refugee (8:34 AM)
ROD STEWART - Forever Young (8:04 AM) (I'm pretty sure this is one of his newer ones)
PAT BENATAR - Love Is A Battlefield (7:01 AM)
JOURNEY - Lights (6:44 AM)

That's just a sample. With the exception of the Bon Jovi song, those songs were all played within a four-hour span, this morning.

Look, I'm not even halfway through my life yet... I turn 40 on October 24th. Really. The stuff I loved in high school CAN'T be considered "Oldies." There's gotta be some kind of law...

...or something...

...right?
